R Shaefer Heard Day Use
This is a day-use only facility. Overnight camping is not permitted. The group shelters are available for reservation. The location is unstaffed.
About
R Shaefer Heard Day Use Park sits on the shoreline of West Point Lake, a 35-mile reservoir along the Chattahoochee River on the Alabama-Georgia border. Managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this day-use area provides recreational access to the lake's 525 miles of shoreline. The park features two group shelters, each equipped with picnic tables, grills, and nearby restrooms. A boat ramp provides direct lake access for boaters, while shoreline areas offer good bank fishing opportunities. Hiking and biking trails wind through the property. This is a day-use only facility. Overnight camping is not permitted here. The nearby R. Shaefer Heard Campground is a separate facility that does offer overnight camping. Golf carts, ATVs, UTVs, and dirt bikes are prohibited. Pets must be leashed (under 6 feet) and are not allowed on beaches.
Directions
From West Point, Georgia, take U.S. Highway 29 north for 4 miles, then turn left at the West Point Project sign and travel a short distance to a right turn into the Day Use Area.
