About

Prairie Campground at Lake Shetek State Park provides a simple, rustic camping experience on Minnesota's southwestern prairie. The 12 non-electric sites accommodate tents and small campers in an open, grassy setting with shade trees providing relief from summer sun. As a rustic campground, Prairie offers a quieter alternative to the park's more developed Oak Woods and Sunrise campgrounds. Lake Shetek State Park encompasses over 1,100 acres on the eastern shore of Lake Shetek, the largest lake in southwestern Minnesota and headwaters of the Des Moines River. The park features 14 miles of hiking trails, a 6-mile paved trail connecting to Currie via the Casey Jones State Trail, and excellent fishing for walleye, northern pike, and channel catfish. The historic WPA-era beach house overlooks a swimming area, and visitors can rent rowboats, canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards. The park preserves significant history from the Dakota War of 1862, including a monument and the restored 1859 Koch Cabin with period furnishings. A visitor center provides interpretive displays, and the Eastlick Marsh observation deck offers wildlife viewing opportunities.
