About

Poverty Flat Hike-in Group Campground sits in a remote creek basin within Henry W. Coe State Park, California's largest state park spanning 87,000 acres of rugged wilderness in the Diablo Range. The campground accommodates groups of 9 to 25 people and requires a 3.6-mile hike from the Coe Ranch Entrance, descending via Corral Trail, Forest Trail, and Poverty Flat Road. The site is truly primitive with only a vault toilet nearby. There is no potable water; a seasonal creek flows through the area but dries in late summer and all water must be purified before consumption. After significant rainfall, the creek can become difficult or dangerous to cross, potentially making the campground inaccessible. Wood and charcoal campfires are never permitted; campers must use gas stoves for cooking. The return hike is strenuous, climbing 1,500 feet over 5.8 miles via Creekside Trail, China Hole Trail, and Manzanita Point Road. Spring and fall offer the best conditions, with summer temperatures frequently exceeding 90°F. Reservations must be made at least 7 days in advance through ReserveCalifornia.

Directions

From the Coe Ranch Entrance and Visitor Center, hike 3.6 miles via Corral Trail to Forest Trail to Poverty Flat Road. The route descends with no elevation gain on the way in but requires a 1,500-foot climb on the return.
