About

Poverty Flat Hike-in Group Camp is nestled in the canyon between Pine Ridge and Middle Ridge at Henry W. Coe State Park, located along the Middle Fork of Coyote Creek. The campground sits approximately 4 miles from the Coe Ranch Entrance and requires a mostly downhill hike to reach, though backpackers should prepare for a very strenuous 1,500-foot elevation gain on the return journey. This primitive group campground accommodates groups of 9 to 25 people and features five designated campsites spread along the rocky creek, pleasantly shaded by large oaks and sycamore trees. The site includes vault toilets but no potable water or vehicle access. A seasonal creek runs through the area, providing water that must be purified before consumption. The creek typically dries in late summer and can become difficult or dangerous to cross after significant rainfall, potentially making the site inaccessible. Reservations must be made at least 7 days in advance through ReserveCalifornia. Wood and charcoal campfires are not permitted at Poverty Flat. All camping groups must bring their own water and supplies for their entire stay, as there are no facilities for resupply. This is an ideal location for experienced backpackers seeking a true wilderness group camping experience in the rugged backcountry of one of California's largest state parks.
