About

Doe Flats group campground sits at Fremont Peak State Park, perched high in the Gavilan Range with expansive views of Monterey Bay, San Benito Valley, Salinas Valley, and the Santa Lucia Mountains. The group site accommodates up to 50 campers and is located at some distance from the park's two individual campgrounds, providing privacy for larger gatherings. The primitive facilities include tables, fire rings, and pit toilets, with drinking water available at the park. The park's 3,169-foot summit is accessible via hiking trails through grasslands and oak woodlands that host diverse bird and wildlife populations. The park is also home to the Fremont Peak Observatory with a 30-inch telescope, open to the public on selected evenings. Maximum RV or trailer length is 25 feet. Wood and charcoal fires are permitted in provided fire rings except during fire season. Day use parking fee is $6 per vehicle.

Directions

Off Highway 156, 11 miles south of San Juan Bautista on San Juan Canyon Road. Best to arrive before sundown as headlights after sunset disrupt observatory activities.
