About
Coe Ranch Campground is the main drive-in camping facility at Henry W. Coe State Park, Northern California's largest state park with 87,000 acres of rugged wilderness. Perched atop Pine Ridge at 2,600 feet elevation, the campground occupies a narrow ridge with spectacular views across the Diablo Range backcountry and into the southern Santa Clara Valley. The 20 drive-in campsites vary in size, with most having limited tent space due to the steep ridge topography. Each site includes a picnic table and metal fire ring with grill grate. The campground serves as a basecamp for exploring the park's extensive trail system, with 250 miles of trails open to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Spring is the most popular season, when the hills erupt with wildflowers including lupine, poppies, gold fields, and mariposa lilies. The terrain is extremely rugged, and summers are hot and dry with temperatures exceeding 90 degrees. Water sources in the backcountry are limited or nonexistent during summer months. Winter brings wet conditions with seasonal creeks that can overflow and become impassable. The campground is located approximately 13 miles east of Morgan Hill via a narrow, winding 10-mile stretch of East Dunne Avenue that takes about 30 minutes to drive beyond Anderson Lake.
Directions
From Highway 101 in Morgan Hill, take the East Dunne Avenue exit and go east past Anderson Lake to the end of the county road. The road beyond Anderson Lake is 10 miles of narrow, winding road requiring approximately 30 minutes to reach the park headquarters.
