About

Possum Kingdom State Park sits in the rugged canyon country of the Palo Pinto Mountains along the Brazos River Valley, approximately one hour west of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The park encompasses over 1,530 acres adjacent to Possum Kingdom Lake, a 20,000-acre reservoir known for its exceptionally clear blue water and over 300 miles of scenic shoreline and coves. Built by Civilian Conservation Corps Company 2888 from May 1941 to July 1942, this was the last CCC project in Texas. The CCC workers cleared the park area and shoreline, built campsites and picnic tables, and constructed roads, though their plans changed when the new reservoir filled unexpectedly. The park offers extensive water recreation opportunities including swimming at a designated beach area, boating with a boat launch and marina, fishing for largemouth bass, striped bass, white bass, channel catfish, blue catfish, and white crappie, plus water skiing, scuba diving, and snorkeling. A fishing pier and fish cleaning station are available. Land-based activities include camping in multiple campground areas, hiking, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, geocaching, and nature study. The park store and marina offers rentals for boats, kayaks, and paddle boats, plus supplies, groceries, and souvenirs. Peak visitation occurs March through October on weekends and June through August all week, with reservations strongly recommended during these periods.
