About
Porter Lake Hunt Camp is a primitive, no-fee camping area located on Porter Lake in Liberty County's Apalachicola National Forest. The site provides direct access to Porter Lake for fishing and serves as a launch point for paddlers exploring the winding channels through the floodplain forest of the Ochlockonee River basin. As a designated trailhead along the Florida National Scenic Trail, the camp offers access to trails heading east toward Smith Creek and Bradwell Bay, or west to Vilas and Camel Lake. The camp is primarily used as a hunt camp during general gun season, which typically runs from Thanksgiving weekend through January. Non-hunters are allowed to camp during hunting season but should be aware of the active hunting environment and wear appropriate safety orange clothing. The facility provides basic amenities including vault toilets, picnic tables, parking, and a natural well that is not suitable for drinking water. Campers must bring their own potable water and be prepared for primitive conditions with no hookups, showers, or trash service. The 14-day camping limit applies to all visitors.
