About
Porcupine Campground occupies a remote but accessible location at the end of the Hope Highway in the Chugach National Forest, where Porcupine Creek meets the south coast of Turnagain Arm. The 34-site campground sits within a birch forest and offers both tent-only and RV sites without hookups. A scenic overlook provides opportunities to watch windsurfers and spot Beluga whales in the bay. The nearby town of Hope, considered the best-preserved gold rush town in the region, offers historic streets and gold panning opportunities. Popular activities include fishing, hiking, whitewater rafting, and exploring the Gull Rock Trail, which extends 5.1 miles along the shoreline with gradual hills and occasional steep sections. Snow typically melts by early May, making late spring through early fall the prime camping season. The campground provides vault toilets, potable water from a hand well, fire rings, picnic tables, and a dumpster. Firewood is available for purchase on-site. A 14-night maximum stay limit applies, and bear-aware food storage in approved containers or vehicles is mandatory.
Directions
From Anchorage, go about 70 miles south on Seward Highway to the Hope cutoff. Bear right at the Y junction and continue 17.8 miles to the town of Hope. The campground is at the end of the road.
