About
East Creek Cabin provides a primitive backcountry experience in the heart of Chugach National Forest on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula. This 12x14-foot rustic cabin sits in a fairly level area within the Resurrection Creek Valley, surrounded by spruce and birch forest with views of nearby mountains and meadows. The cabin accommodates up to 8 people with bunk space for 6, and includes basic amenities: counter space, a table, benches, a wood stove for heat, plus a splitting maul and hand saw. An outhouse is located outside. The cabin is accessible via the Resurrection Pass Trail system, requiring a 14.5-mile hike from the north trailhead or 24.3 miles from the south trailhead. The trail is open to hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Snowmobile access is permitted every other winter season from December 1 to April 30. The trail is closed to horses and pack stock April 1 to June 30. Active mining claims exist along East Creek, with designated public areas for gold panning. Visitors must be completely self-sufficient. There is no electricity, potable water, mattresses, bedding, cooking utensils, or cut firewood provided. All water must be brought in or treated from natural sources. All garbage and food must be packed out. The area supports diverse wildlife including moose, black and brown bears, Dall sheep, mountain goats, caribou, and wolves. Berries ripen mid-July through mid-September. Fishing in the area is limited. Winter travelers should be prepared to evaluate avalanche and over-ice travel conditions.
Directions
Follow Hope Highway from Seward Highway. From Resurrection Pass North Trailhead at milepost 4 on Resurrection Creek Road, hike 14.5 miles to the cabin (add 1 mile in winter due to limited road plowing). From Resurrection Pass South Trailhead at milepost 53.2 on Sterling Highway, hike 24.3 miles to the cabin. Refer to USGS topographic map Seward C-8.
