About
Tenderfoot Creek Campground is perched along the eastern shore of Summit Lake, a small cirque lake carved by ancient glaciers in Alaska's Chugach National Forest. The campground offers 35 sites that face the lake's edge, providing stunning mountain views in every direction. Most sites are pull-through with gravel parking aprons, making it accessible for RVs and trailers. Tenderfoot Creek flows through the campground amid a forest of spruce and hemlock. The area is rich with wildlife including moose, brown and black bears, mountain goats, lynx, and wolves. Morning wake-up calls from loons and bald eagles fishing in the clear waters are common experiences. Bear awareness is essential; food storage lockers are provided and all food must be stored properly. Recreation opportunities abound with fishing for Dolly Varden and Rainbow trout in the stocked lake, kayaking, canoeing, and hiking. The Summit Lake Trail departs from the south end of the lake and connects to the Resurrection Pass Trail, a 39-mile route that climbs 2,100 feet through spectacular alpine terrain. Firewood is available for purchase on-site.
Directions
From Anchorage, drive south on Seward Highway approximately 81 miles to Summit Lake. Turn at milepost 46, just before Summit Lake Lodge.
