About

Pioneer Pass Campground is a large dispersed camping site in the Globe Ranger District of Tonto National Forest, set in the cool Pinal Mountains at 6,000 feet elevation. The campground consists of four distinct areas: Granite and Toll Gate each have a vault toilet and 6 picnic tables with fire rings; Wagon Wheel features a vault toilet and 4-5 tables with fire rings in a larger, less-defined group area that can accommodate one smaller trailer; and Cattle Trap offers a vault toilet and 8 tables with fire rings. Located south of Pioneer Pass, the campground provides access to the Bobtail Spring trail leading to Pinal Peak and the East Mountain Trail, popular for nature viewing, day hikes, and family outings. The site operates first-come, first-served with no fees or reservations required. Campers must pack out all trash as there is no trash service, and bring their own water as none is available on-site. Trailers and RVs are generally not recommended, though trailers under 16 feet may fit at Wagon Wheel. Stay limit is 14 days, with quiet hours from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Directions

From Globe, follow paved Jess Hayes Road to the junction of Icehouse Canyon Road (FR 112) and Six-shooter Canyon Road (FR 222). Continue on FR 112 for 2 miles to the junction of FR 55 and FR 112. Stay left and continue on FR 112 (becomes unpaved) for another 6 miles to the site.
