About

Kellner Group Site is nestled at the base of the beautiful Pinal Mountains, about 5 miles southwest of Globe, Arizona. This historic site features unique rock walls and steps constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1940s, creating a distinctive atmosphere in the riparian area of Kellner Canyon. A small stream frequently flows through the canyon following winter runoff, supporting large sycamore and white oak trees that provide shade throughout the site. The site sits at 4,400 feet elevation and offers spectacular views of the Pinal Mountains, which rise 3,500 feet above. Wildlife in the area includes a large variety of birds, chipmunks, squirrels, coatimundi, and Coues whitetail deer. The Pinal Mountains are considered a "Sky Island" and provide excellent bird-watching opportunities. The 2017 fire affected some surrounding vegetation but the site remains a beautiful destination. Kellner Group Site is accessed via a gated three-quarter-mile road, giving it a remote and private feel. The site accommodates up to 25 people and 5 vehicles, with limited parking and no room to turn a trailer around. A short 7-mile drive leads to Icehouse Canyon Day Use Area, which hosts trailheads for Six Shooter Canyon Trail, Ice House Canyon Trail, Kellner Canyon Trail, and the Telephone Trail. The nearby city of Globe offers restaurants, antique shops, grocery stores, and other amenities.

Directions

Located 5 miles southwest of Globe. Follow Jess Hayes Road southeast of Globe to the junction of Icehouse Canyon Road and Six Shooter Canyon Road. Continue on Icehouse Canyon for 3 miles to the junction of Forest Road 55 and 112. Take the right fork and continue following FR 55 for another 3 miles to the site.
