About

Kellner Group Site is a historic group campground nestled at the base of the Pinal Mountains in Tonto National Forest, south of Globe, Arizona. The site's distinctive rock walls and steps were handcrafted by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1940s, giving it unique character. Located in the riparian area of Kellner Canyon at 4,400 feet elevation, the campground sits among large sycamore and white oak trees that provide welcome shade. A small stream often runs through the canyon following winter runoff. The Pinal Mountains are considered a "Sky Island" ecosystem, making this an excellent location for birding and wildlife viewing. Visitors may spot chipmunks, squirrels, coatimundi, and Coues whitetail deer. A short 7-mile drive leads to Icehouse Canyon Day Use Area with trailheads for Six Shooter Canyon Trail, Ice House Canyon Trail, Kellner Canyon Trail, and the Telephone Trail. The campground accommodates up to 25 people with five picnic units featuring tables and grills, plus one group fire ring. A vault toilet is provided but there is no potable water. The site is accessed via a gated 3/4-mile road, giving it privacy. Parking is limited and trailers are not recommended as there is no room to turn around. The nearby town of Globe offers restaurants, grocery stores, and other services.

Directions

Located 5 miles southwest of Globe. Follow Jess Hayes Road southeast of Globe to the junction of Icehouse Canyon Road and Six Shooter Canyon Road.
