About

Pinal and Upper Pinal Campgrounds sit at 7,500 feet elevation in the Pinal Mountains, about 14.5 miles southwest of Globe. The campgrounds are shaded by tall stands of ponderosa pines and white fir, providing welcome relief during hot summer months. Pinal is the larger of the two with 13 camp units, while Upper Pinal offers 3 more secluded units. Both campgrounds occupy a site formerly used by the US Army as a heliographic signaling station during the late 1800s. At least eight hiking trails are accessible within one mile, offering spectacular mountain views. Nearby Ferndell Spring in upper Sixshooter Canyon is home to the nation's largest canyon maple tree, approximately three-quarters of a mile down Sixshooter Canyon Trail #192 from Upper Pinal. These are primitive, no-fee campgrounds with vault toilets and picnic tables but no potable water or trash service. Campers must bring their own water and pack out all waste. Access is via FR 651, a narrow winding mountain gravel road suitable for sedans in dry conditions. Trailers are limited to under 16 feet.

Directions

From Globe, follow paved Jess Hayes Road southeast to the junction of Icehouse Canyon Road/FR 112 and Six-shooter Canyon Road/FR 222. Continue on paved FR 112 for 2.5 miles to the junction of FR 55 and FR 112. Take the right fork and continue on partially paved FR 55 for 2.5 miles. At the junction of FR 55 and FR 651, turn left. Proceed 10 miles on unpaved FR 651 to the campgrounds. FR 651 is a narrow winding mountain gravel road suitable for sedans under dry conditions.
