About

Pine Valley Guard Station is a historic cabin built in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps to house a recreation guard during summer months. The one-bedroom cabin sleeps 5-6 people and is located in the scenic Pine Valley Recreation Area of Dixie National Forest, approximately 45 minutes from St. George, Utah. At an elevation of 6,800 feet, the cabin offers warm summer days and cool nights, surrounded by ponderosa pine trees with scenic views of the Pine Valley Mountains. The cabin features modern amenities including electricity, making it a comfortable retreat. It is centrally located near Pine Valley Reservoir, which offers fishing for rainbow trout, and provides access to numerous non-motorized trails leading into the Pine Valley Mountain Wilderness. The wilderness area rises to Signal Peak at 10,365 feet and preserves lush meadows and forests of Engelmann spruce, fir, pine, and aspen. Wildlife includes chipmunks, marmots, red squirrels, blue grouse, and deer. During winter months, the area transforms into a snowy landscape ideal for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. When seasonal gate closures occur from October through April, guests may need to ski, snowshoe, or hike approximately 1.5 miles from the entrance trailhead to reach the cabin.

Directions

From Exit 6 in St. George, Utah, turn north onto Bluff Street, which becomes Utah Highway 18 North and continue for 27 miles. Turn east onto Pine Valley Highway and travel 6.9 miles into Pine Valley. From the Pine Valley stop sign, turn east onto Main Street and follow 2 miles to the Pine Valley Recreation Area. The Guard Station is located a quarter mile past the reservoir parking lot on the north side of the road. During winter months with seasonal gate closures, a 1.5 mile ski, snowshoe, or hike is required from the winter trailhead at the entrance to the Pine Valley Recreation Area.
