About

Pigeon Creek Campground is a rustic, tent-only camping area situated in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest on the east side of the Highland Mountain Range. Located approximately 20 miles east of Butte at an elevation of 5,500 feet, this small campground features 6 designated sites in a forested setting. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees required. Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, and vault toilets are available. However, campers must bring their own water as no potable water is provided. Access is via Forest Service Road 668 (Fish Creek Road), a narrow gravel road with steep sections and sharp turns that is suitable only for passenger vehicles and not recommended for trailers or large RVs. The campground offers fishing opportunities in nearby Pigeon Creek and is located in bear country, requiring proper food storage practices. The remote location and basic amenities make this an ideal destination for tent campers seeking solitude and a primitive camping experience. A 16-day stay limit applies, and visitors should be prepared for pack-in, pack-out camping practices.

Directions

From Butte, take MT Highway 2 for approximately 15 miles. Turn right onto Forest Service Road 668 (Fish Creek Road) and continue for approximately 5 miles. The campground will be on the left. The road is a gravel road suitable for passenger vehicle access and not suitable for trailer traffic, as the road is narrow and steep with sharp turns.
