About

Pershing State Park, named after World War I General John J. Pershing who was born nearby, protects one of Missouri's few remaining examples of wet prairie habitat. The campground sits in a wooded area offering welcome shade during summer months, with both electric and basic sites available year-round. Modern amenities include flush restrooms, hot showers (seasonal), laundry facilities, and a sanitary dump station. The park's 3,576 acres feature a meandering stretch of Locust Creek with oxbow sloughs and cutoffs characteristic of an unaltered prairie stream. A boardwalk trail winds through the wet prairie, providing an accessible way to experience this unique ecosystem. Four small lakes offer fishing for bass, bluegill, channel catfish, bullhead, carp, and drum. Boating is permitted with electric motors only. An enclosed picnic shelter with kitchen facilities and an open shelter with water and electricity are available for day use. Backcountry camping along the Locust Creek Riparian Trail is free with registration. The park serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding prairie region and learning about General Pershing's legacy at nearby attractions.
