Boone's Lick State Historic Site Shelter
Open — Open year-round for day-use only. This is a historic site with a picnic shelter, not an overnight camping facility.
About
Boone's Lick State Historic Site preserves a significant piece of Missouri's early industrial history. Established in 1960, the 52-acre wooded site protects the remnants of a salt works operated by Nathan and Daniel Morgan Boone, sons of legendary frontiersman Daniel Boone, beginning in 1805. Salt was a critical commodity for early settlers, used for preserving meat and tanning hides, making this spring one of the most important economic sites in the region. Visitors can explore a well-maintained trail with interpretive panels that leads to the historic salt spring and the stone furnace remains where brine water was boiled in iron kettles to crystallize salt. The area became so significant that it gave its name to the entire "Boonslick" region and the Boone's Lick Trail, which served as a major route for westward-bound pioneers. The site includes a picnic shelter that accommodates approximately 40 people, vault toilets, and informative kiosk displays explaining the salt-processing methods and the site's historical importance. Located in Howard County along Highway 187 near Boonesboro, about four miles east of Arrow Rock, the site offers a peaceful setting for day-use activities including picnicking, hiking, and exploring Missouri's frontier heritage. The interpretive trail and displays make it an educational destination for history enthusiasts and families interested in early American industry and the legacy of the Boone family in Missouri.
