About
Payne Lake Recreation Area offers outdoor enthusiasts a peaceful retreat along the 110-acre Payne Lake in Alabama's Talladega National Forest. The campground features 26 developed campsites situated along the scenic shoreline, each equipped with a picnic table, fire ring or cooking circle, and tent or trailer pad. Some sites offer water and electric hookups for an additional fee.
The recreation area includes two bathhouses with showers, a swimming beach, and a trailer dump station. The lake provides excellent opportunities for fishing and non-motorized boating in a tranquil setting surrounded by mixed hardwood-pine forest. Nature trails wind through the area, offering hikers a chance to explore the diverse ecosystem.
Payne Lake is located in the Oakmulgee Division of Talladega National Forest, characterized by rolling hills, cattail swamps, and forested ridges. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis and accepts cash or check payments. Campsites are $18 per night, with additional fees for water ($5) and electric ($12) hookups where available.
Directions
From Brent, take State Highway 5 South for approximately 5.7 miles, turn right onto State Highway 25 South and travel for approximately 16 miles, turn sharp right onto County Road 71 for approximately 0.7 miles. Campground will be straight ahead.
