About

Parksville Recreation Area is a rural day-use park located on J. Strom Thurmond Lake in McCormick County, South Carolina, along State Highway 28/221. This wooded facility sits on one of the largest Corps of Engineers lakes east of the Mississippi River, featuring 70,000 surface-acres of water and over 1,000 miles of shoreline. The park offers two group picnic shelters available for reservation: Beach Shelter accommodates up to 90 people with electrical hookups, while Hillside Shelter accommodates up to 36 people without hookups. Day-use amenities include flush toilets, drinking water, a boat ramp with dock, playground, and a grassy field. A designated swimming beach provides lake access. Thurmond Lake provides exceptional fishing opportunities for largemouth bass, bream, crappie, catfish, and striped bass. The large lake offers endless boating, water skiing, jet skiing, and canoeing opportunities. The heavily wooded area features mixed pine and hardwood forest at 335 feet elevation, with hot humid summers and mild winters. Wildlife is abundant, with regular sightings of southern bald eagles, osprey, migratory waterfowl, wild turkeys, and whitetail deer.
