About
Bussey Point Campground sits at the entrance to a 2,545-acre peninsula on J. Strom Thurmond Lake, offering one of the best opportunities on the lake to view wildlife in its natural setting. The campground features 14 primitive campsites without water or electric hookups, each equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and grill. Rustic pit toilets and hand pumps for non-potable water are located throughout the area.
The Bussey Point horse trail, created by horseback riders for horseback riders, circles the peninsula for 12.5 miles. An additional 20 miles of roads and trails within the area welcome hikers and mountain bikers. The wilderness recreation area contains 15 food plots, six hike/bike/ride/boat-in camping and picnic sites, and several natural beaches. A boat launching ramp provides access to Thurmond Lake's excellent fishing for largemouth bass, bream, crappie, catfish, and striped bass.
The heavily wooded area features a mixed pine and hardwood forest providing summer shade and fall color. Wildlife is abundant, with visitors regularly spotting southern bald eagles, migratory waterfowl, wild turkeys, and whitetail deer. Hot, humid summers and mild, pleasant winters characterize the area. The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served and reservation basis through Recreation.gov.
