About
Located at the gateway to the Bussey Point Wilderness Recreation Area, this primitive campground offers 14 campsites split between two loops on a scenic peninsula jutting into J. Strom Thurmond Lake. The campground caters especially to equestrians, with sites designed to accommodate horse trailers and tie-out posts available. Each campsite includes a picnic table, fire ring, and grill.
The surrounding 2,545-acre wilderness area features a 12.5-mile horse trail circling the peninsula, plus an additional 20 miles of roads and trails open to hikers and mountain bikers (no motorized vehicles). Six hike/bike/boat-in primitive camping and picnic sites dot the peninsula, along with natural beaches and 15 food plots that attract abundant deer, wild turkey, and other wildlife. Southern bald eagles and migratory waterfowl are regularly spotted.
Facilities are minimal: vault toilets (one per loop), hand pumps providing non-potable water, and a boat launch ramp. There are no hookups, showers, dump station, or trash service. Campers must bring drinking water and pack out all trash.
