Petersburg Campground occupies a scenic position on J. Strom Thurmond Lake, offering excellent access to one of the Southeast's premier fishing and water-sports destinations. The 70,000-acre lake supports largemouth bass, crappie, striped bass, and catfish. Most of the 93 campsites include 50-amp electric and water hookups; eight non-electric sites are also available. Four bathhouses with flush toilets and hot showers are distributed throughout the campground. Recreation options extend well beyond the water. The largest trailhead for the 27-mile Bartram Trail sits just outside the campground entrance, providing miles of hiking and mountain biking along the lakeshore. Additional facilities include two dump stations, a boat ramp with courtesy dock, a fishing pier, two swimming beaches, a playground, and a reservable pavilion. Wildlife sightings are common, including bald eagles, migratory waterfowl, wild turkeys, and whitetail deer. Reservations are made through Recreation.gov. Gate hours are 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., with check-in at 3:00 p.m. and checkout at 1:00 p.m. Maximum stay is 14 nights per 30-day period. Pets must remain leashed. Alcohol, fireworks, and ATVs/UTVs are prohibited.
