About

Modoc Campground is located on J. Strom Thurmond Lake, only five miles from the Lake Thurmond Visitor Center and Dam. The campground provides prime access to one of the Southeast's premier recreational lakes, with over 70,000 acres of water and more than 1,000 miles of shoreline. The lake offers exceptional fishing for largemouth bass, bream, crappie, catfish, and striped bass, as well as excellent conditions for boating, water skiing, jet skiing, canoeing, and swimming. The campground itself is surrounded by a mix of pine and hardwood trees that provide shade and visual interest, with many sites offering views of the lake. Wildlife is abundant in the area, with regular sightings of southern bald eagles, migratory waterfowl, neo-tropical birds, wild turkeys, and whitetail deer. Numerous parks and recreation areas surround Thurmond Lake, providing additional settings for outdoor activities. Within five miles, campers can visit the dam, Visitor Center, and various trails. Nearby cities offer museums, art galleries, restaurants, and shopping. The campground is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and typically operates seasonally.

Directions

From I-20, take Exit 200 (River Watch Parkway). Turn right and drive 2 miles to Furys Ferry Road (Highway 28 West). Turn right and drive 13 miles to Clarks Hill, SC. Continue northwest on Highway 221 for approximately 4 miles to the campground entrance at 296 Modoc Camp Road.
