About
Sitkoh Lake West Cabin sits nestled at the northwest shore of Sitkoh Lake on southeastern Chichagof Island, 35 miles northeast of Sitka, Alaska. This rustic 12' x 14' Pan Abode-style cabin is surrounded by towering old-growth spruce and hemlock forest, with muskeg and open meadows to the east. The lake sits at 194 feet elevation, stretching 2.5 miles long and half a mile wide, ringed by forested mountains rising to nearly 2,500 feet. The cabin accommodates up to 6 people and is equipped with plywood bunks, a table with benches, wood stove for heating, cooking counter and cupboard, axe or splitting maul, outdoor screened cooler box, and a small skiff with oars for lake access. An outhouse is located nearby. Creek water is available but must be treated. Visitors must bring sleeping bags, pads, cooking stove, cookware, food, toilet paper, lantern, garbage bags, fire extinguisher, rain gear, boots, and PFDs for the skiff. The lake offers excellent fishing for cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden year-round. Sitkoh Creek at the east end has steelhead runs in spring, pink and sockeye salmon July through August, and coho salmon August through September. A 4.3-mile trail (in poor condition) follows Sitkoh Creek to Sitkoh Bay. Deer and waterfowl hunting are popular in the surrounding area. Brown bears frequent the area, and seasonal salmonberries and blueberries are abundant.
