About

Olallie Lake Guard Station Cabin is a historically significant, two-story cabin built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. It is a classic example of Forest Service rustic architectural style from the Depression Era and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. The cabin features well-preserved period details including a massive rock chimney, interior wood finishing, and hand-wrought iron work that give visitors an authentic old-fashioned cabin experience. Located on the far south end of Mt. Hood National Forest near the shore of Olallie Lake, the cabin sits at nearly 5,000 feet elevation and offers stunning views of the north face of 10,497-foot Mt. Jefferson and 7,215-foot Olallie Butte. The cabin is situated in the heart of the Olallie Lake Scenic Area, which contains several lakes and miles of trails including the Pacific Crest Trail that runs directly adjacent to the property. Olallie is Chinook jargon for "berry." The 240-acre Olallie Lake offers excellent fishing for stocked rainbow trout and non-motorized boating. Rental rowboats are available at the nearby Olallie Resort, which also has a small store selling food and supplies. Many of the trails and graveled roads in the area are open for mountain biking. Swimming is allowed in all lakes except Olallie Lake itself. The cabin provides a unique opportunity to experience both historic Forest Service architecture and remote mountain recreation in the Cascade Range.
