Special Weather Statement issued May 3 at 3:18AM EDT by NWS Albany NY

3:18 AM — 7:00 PM

The combination of drying fine fuels, northwest wind gusts between 20 and 30 mph, and relative humidity values between 25 and 35 percent will contribute to an elevated risk of fire spread late this morning into this afternoon for the Mid-Hudson Valley, eastern Catskills, Taconics, Greater Capital District, and Lake George-Saratoga regions in eastern New York. As a reminder, the annual statewide burn ban remains in effect until May 14. No burn permits are issued. Use extra caution if handling any potential ignition sources such as machinery or matches and ensure to properly extinguish or dispose of cigarette butts. Please refer to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation website for more information on burn restrictions.

About

Cherry Plain State Park encompasses 175 acres in the wooded Taconic Valley of Rensselaer County, offering a scenic retreat centered on Black River Pond. The park features 30 diverse campsites including 10 trailer sites suitable for small RVs up to 15 feet, 10 lakeside tent sites, and 10 hike-in tent sites for a more secluded experience. The park's main attraction is Black River Pond, which features a sandy swimming beach, boat launch, and boat rentals including rowboats and kayaks. Recreational opportunities include fishing for bass, bullheads, and pickerel, as well as ice fishing in winter. An extensive trail system serves hikers, bikers, and horseback riders, with trails also available for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing during winter months. The park is nearly surrounded by the 4,153-acre Capital District Wildlife Management Area, providing additional forested land for exploration. Day-use facilities include picnic areas, two rental pavilions, a playground, and public restrooms with showers. Reservations are handled through ReserveAmerica, and the park operates seasonally with weekend-only camping from Memorial Day through late June, then daily camping through Labor Day. Pets are permitted in campsites with standard restrictions. Hunting is allowed in designated areas during appropriate seasons with required permits.
