About
Oceanside Walk-in Campground sits on the Atlantic side of Assateague Island, a 37-mile barrier island shared between Maryland and Virginia known for its free-roaming wild horses. The 62 tent-only sites are set back from a parking area, requiring campers to carry gear 100-200 feet across soft sand. Long tent stakes are recommended for anchoring in the sandy terrain. Each site accommodates up to 6 people and 3 tents, with one vehicle per site permitted. The campground operates seasonally from March 15 through November 15, with reservations required during this period. Sites can be booked through Recreation.gov up to six months in advance, and weekend availability fills quickly. Generators are prohibited in the walk-in area. Quiet hours run from 10 PM to 6 AM, and camping is limited to 14 consecutive nights. Seasonal amenities include vault toilets, potable water, and free cold outdoor showers for rinsing off beach sand. A camp store sells firewood, ice, and supplies during the season. Campers must use firewood purchased within 50 miles of the park. Fires are permitted only in the provided fire rings and must be fully extinguished with water. Food storage lockers are available to protect supplies from the island's wildlife.
