Special Weather Statement issued January 18 at 8:24PM EST by NWS Wakefield VA
With temperatures dropping well below freezing tonight into Monday morning, black ice development is likely as wet roads freeze. Roads may therefore become slick and slippery, especially on untreated, secondary, and back roads. Slow down and use caution when driving, especially when traversing roads that have not been treated. If you are walking outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury. Road and sidewalk conditions should improve later Monday morning as temperatures warm to above freezing.
About
Horse Camping at Assateague Island National Seashore provides a distinctive opportunity for equestrian enthusiasts to camp with their horses on a barrier island near the Atlantic Ocean. This specialized campground features two dedicated sites, each equipped with hitching posts, fire rings with grills, and picnic tables. Each site accommodates up to 6 people, 6 horses, and up to 6 vehicles or trailers with a maximum length of 45 feet. Campers must bring their own horses and follow strict guidelines including using certified weed-free hay to prevent invasive species introduction, never leaving horses unattended due to the presence of wild horses throughout the park, and removing all manure piles from the campsite. Portable corrals are permitted. Out-of-state horses require a current Coggins test. The campground provides seasonal vault toilets, cold showers, and potable water when operational. The location offers access to miles of scenic beach and trail riding through diverse coastal habitats. Reservations are required from October 16 through April 14 and can be made up to six months in advance through Recreation.gov. Sites are $80 per night, and a separate vehicle entrance fee of $25 applies. Firewood must be purchased locally and cannot be brought from out of state.
