Horse camping at Assateague Island National Seashore provides a unique opportunity to camp with your horses on a remote Atlantic barrier island known for its wild ponies. The two equestrian sites (Horse Camp A and B) are oceanfront locations with 60-foot gravel driveways suitable for large horse trailers. Each site includes hitching posts for securing horses, multiple picnic tables, and fire rings with grills. The campground operates seasonally from October 16 through April 14, avoiding the peak summer heat and crowds while offering cooler riding conditions. Campers have access to vault toilets, seasonal potable water, and cold showers when available. A dump station is located nearby. Firewood is not sold on the island during the off-season, so campers should bring their own or purchase locally before arriving. All horses brought to the park must have current Coggins test documentation, and hay must be certified weed-free to protect the island ecosystem. Wild horses roam freely throughout the park and may approach your camp, so horses should never be left unattended. The island offers miles of beach trails for riding with stunning ocean views.
