About

Assateague Island National Seashore Campground sits on a constantly shifting barrier island along the Atlantic Coast, famous for its population of wild horses. The 37-mile island features sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays that provide habitat for wild horses, sika deer, ghost crabs, and migrating birds including great blue herons and snowy egrets. The oceanside drive-in campground accommodates tents, trailers, and RVs with no hookups. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring. The campground has two loops: Loop 1 closes seasonally during winter, while Loop 2 remains open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis during the off-season. Cold showers, vault toilets, and potable water are available seasonally, with vault toilets accessible year-round. Recreational opportunities abound with fishing, surfing, swimming, crabbing, clamming, kayaking, and beachcombing. The island's dynamic landscape changes daily with wind and waves, offering a true coastal wilderness experience. Beach wheelchairs are available for oceanside beach access. A camp store operates seasonally, and firewood must be purchased locally. The park entrance requires a separate vehicle entrance fee unless you hold an America the Beautiful pass.
