About
Assateague Island National Seashore Campground sits on a 37-mile barrier island along the Atlantic Coast, renowned for its wild horses and pristine beaches. The campground offers multiple camping options including oceanside drive-in sites for tents and RVs, oceanside walk-in tent sites, bayside drive-in sites with fire rings and grills, group tent camping, and seasonal equestrian sites. Each site includes a picnic table, and fire rings are provided at bayside and group sites. The island's ever-shifting landscape offers access to sandy ocean beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays. Popular activities include swimming, surfing, fishing, crabbing, clamming, and wildlife watching. Sika deer, ghost crabs, migratory shorebirds, and the famous feral horses inhabit the island. Campers must maintain a 40-foot distance from horses and store all food in latchable hard-sided coolers. Amenities include vault toilets year-round, seasonal cold-water outdoor showers for rinsing sand (mid-March through mid-November), potable water when temperatures are above freezing, and dump stations. A camp store operates seasonally. Extreme mosquito and biting insect conditions are normal, so come prepared with repellent and protective clothing.
