About

Back Country Camping at Tingles Island offers a primitive wilderness experience on the bay side of Assateague Island National Seashore. This remote site is accessible only by hiking or kayaking, with most visitors paddling approximately 2.5 miles from the mainland. The site can accommodate up to 25 people and provides a peaceful setting surrounded by the island's unique coastal ecosystem, where you may encounter the famous Assateague wild horses, horseshoe crabs, and various seabirds. The campsite is equipped with basic amenities including picnic tables, fire rings, grills, and vault toilets. There is no potable water available, so campers must bring all the water they need. Dead and down wood may be collected for campfires, but firewood from out of state is prohibited. Glass containers are not allowed at backcountry sites, and all trash must be packed out. Motorized transportation of campers or equipment is strictly prohibited. Permits are required for backcountry camping and cost $10 per person over age 16 for up to 7 days. Permits are issued first-come, first-served on the day of departure from the Maryland District Ranger Station and cannot be reserved in advance due to changing weather conditions. All parties must be present to obtain a permit, and campers must depart at least 2 hours before sunset when accessing from Maryland. Pets are not permitted at backcountry sites. This is an ideal destination for experienced campers seeking solitude and a true wilderness experience on Maryland's Atlantic coast.
