About

Tingles Island is one of four bayside backcountry campsites at Assateague Island National Seashore, located in a forested area along Sinepuxent Bay. The site offers a secluded camping experience on the barrier island, away from the developed campgrounds. Access is by foot from the North Beach parking area or by paddle from Old Ferry Landing or the Bayside Picnic Area. Transportation of campers or equipment by motorized boat or vehicle is strictly prohibited. The site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and chemical toilet. No potable water is available; campers must carry all water and supplies, with a recommended minimum of one gallon per person per day. Fires are permitted only in the designated fire ring using dead and downed wood collected on site. All trash must be packed out, and glass containers are prohibited. Backcountry permits cost $10 per person for ages 16 and older and are valid for up to 7 days. Permits are issued only at the Maryland Ranger Station on a first-come, first-served basis; all party members must be present before issuance. Campers departing from Maryland must check in at least 2 hours before sunset. The sites close during firearm hunting season, typically in mid-October through mid-December and again briefly in January.
