Oceanside Group Campground
Closed — Closed for the winter season. Reopens March 15, 2025. Reservations required and available up to six months in advance through Recreation.gov.
Special Weather Statement issued January 18 at 8:24PM EST by NWS Wakefield VA
With temperatures dropping well below freezing tonight into Monday morning, black ice development is likely as wet roads freeze. Roads may therefore become slick and slippery, especially on untreated, secondary, and back roads. Slow down and use caution when driving, especially when traversing roads that have not been treated. If you are walking outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury. Road and sidewalk conditions should improve later Monday morning as temperatures warm to above freezing.
About
Oceanside Group Campground at Assateague Island National Seashore provides dedicated group camping facilities for organized clubs and affiliated groups along Maryland's Atlantic coast. The campground features five tent-only sites, each designed to accommodate between 7 and 25 campers. Sites are positioned 100-200 feet from a centralized parking area, offering a walk-in camping experience while remaining reasonably accessible. Each site includes multiple picnic tables and fire rings equipped with grills for group cooking. The campground operates seasonally from March 15 through November 15, with all sites requiring advance reservations available up to six months in advance through Recreation.gov. During the operating season, the campground provides vault toilets year-round, seasonal cold-water showers, and potable water. A seasonal camp store offers firewood, ice, and supplies. The campground is located within the Maryland District of Assateague Island National Seashore, providing direct access to undeveloped ocean beaches and opportunities to observe the island's famous wild horses. Group campers must purchase firewood locally, as out-of-state firewood is prohibited. The barrier island environment offers a unique coastal camping experience with opportunities for beach activities, wildlife viewing, and experiencing one of the Atlantic coast's last remaining undeveloped barrier islands. The campground closes for the winter season from November 16 through March 14.
