About

Green Run is one of four bayside backcountry camping areas in the Maryland district of Assateague Island National Seashore. Nestled in a forested setting along the bay, this primitive site offers solitude and direct access to the island's natural beauty away from the developed campgrounds. The site can accommodate groups of up to 25 people and includes a picnic table, fire ring, and chemical toilet. Backcountry permits must be obtained in person at the Maryland District Ranger Station and are issued first-come, first-served; no advance reservations are accepted due to unpredictable weather conditions. Permits cost $10 per person for those 16 and older, plus the park vehicle entrance fee. Permits are available starting four hours before sunset, and all party members must be present at issuance. Itineraries cannot be changed after departure. Campers must be fully self-sufficient. No potable water is available at the site, so bringing at least one gallon per person per day is essential. All trash must be packed out, and glass containers are prohibited. Only dead and downed wood may be collected for fires. Pets are strictly prohibited in all backcountry areas, and transportation by motorized vehicle or boat is not permitted.
