About
Pine Tree is one of several backcountry campsites located on the bayside of Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland. This remote, single-site location is accessible only by foot and provides a primitive camping experience surrounded by the island's unique coastal environment. The site features a designated fire ring for campfires using dead and downed wood only, a picnic table, and a chemical toilet. Backcountry permits are not available by reservation due to unpredictable weather conditions. Instead, permits are issued on a first-come, first-served basis at the Maryland District Ranger Station on the day of departure. All members of your camping party must be present to obtain the permit, which costs $10 per person for anyone 16 years or older and is valid for up to 7 days. A $25 vehicle entrance fee also applies. Campers must be entirely self-sufficient: no potable water is available at any backcountry site, so plan to carry at least one gallon per person per day. All trash must be packed out, and glass containers are prohibited. Pets are not permitted at backcountry sites. Motorized transport of campers or gear to the site is strictly prohibited.
Directions
Obtain your backcountry permit at the Maryland District Ranger Station located at 6633 Bayberry Drive, Berlin, MD 21811. GPS navigation may provide inaccurate directions; follow official park signage.
