About
North Twin Lake Campground is located just north of South Twin Resort on North Twin Lake in the Deschutes National Forest. The lake was formed approximately 20,000 years ago when rising magma encountered groundwater, resulting in violent steam explosions that created a broad, shallow crater which later filled with water. The campground offers direct access to the lake with a small beach at the shallow end that is ideal for wading and swimming. Fishing is popular on North Twin Lake, though motorized boats are prohibited, making it a peaceful destination for kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding. A boat launch area is available within the campground. The Twin Lakes Trail #5.1, an interpretive trail, departs from the campground near the water and provides information about dwarf mistletoe infecting the ponderosa pine trees in the area. The campground can accommodate RVs, trailers, and tent campers with sites featuring spurs up to 40 feet in length. Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit. Vault toilets are available, but there is no potable water on-site. The surrounding landscape features nearby peaks, lava flows, and old-growth forests. The campground is located along the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway and provides access to wilderness areas, trails, and nearby Newberry National Volcanic Monument, approximately 45 minutes away by vehicle.
