About
North Twin Lake Campground is a primitive lakefront campground in Oregon's Deschutes National Forest, located just north of South Twin Resort. The lake itself formed roughly 20,000 years ago when rising magma encountered groundwater, triggering violent steam explosions that created a broad shallow crater which eventually filled with water. Nearby peaks, lava flows, and old-growth forests create a varied volcanic landscape. The campground features 19 standard nonelectric sites suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs with a maximum spur length of 40 feet. Each site comes equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring with grill. Vault toilets are available but there is no potable water, so campers must bring their own water supply. A small beach at the shallow end of the lake provides swimming and wading access, while a boat launch accommodates non-motorized watercraft. Motorized boats are prohibited. An interpretive trail departing near the water educates visitors about dwarf mistletoe infesting the area's ponderosa pines. The Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway and Newberry National Volcanic Monument are within easy driving distance for day trips.
