Closed — Closed for the season. Campground operates approximately mid-May through mid-October. Tentatively scheduled to open May 9, 2026, and close October 19, 2026. Roads are closed in winter due to snow.
Alcohol Prohibitions
This Order describes acts that are prohibited upon lands, roads and trails within the National Forest System administered by the Forest Service Pacific Northwest Region in regards to alcoholic beverages.
Aquatic Invasive Species
This Order prohibits 1) possessing, storing, or transporting any aquatic invasive animal species AND 2) prohibits possessing, storing, or transporting any aquatic or riparian invasive plant species - on National Forest System lands in the Pacific Northwest Region as specified in the Order.
Restrictions on Use of Forage and Mulch Products
This Order prohibits unloading, storing, or using any straw, hay, grain, seed, or other forage or mulch products that are not state-certified weed free on the National Forest System lands, roads or trails in any Closure Area as specific in the Order.

About
Crane Prairie Campground is located on the east shore of its namesake reservoir on Deschutes National Forest just off the scenic Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. This large campground features multiple camping loops with sites directly on the water or within a short walk, making it a prime destination for anglers and boaters. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife manages populations of rainbow trout, mountain whitefish, brook trout, and largemouth bass. A boat launch and fish cleaning stations are available within the campground. The reservoir hosts abundant waterfowl including Sandhill cranes, Canada geese, bald eagles, and osprey. Nearby Osprey Point offers interpretive exhibits and observation platforms for viewing osprey nests. The surrounding forest provides habitat for black-backed woodpeckers, Williamson's sapsuckers, mountain chickadees, deer, squirrels, beavers, and occasional black bears. The campground offers spectacular views of South Sister and Mt. Bachelor on the horizon. The Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway provides access to multiple high lakes and mountain vistas. Newberry National Volcanic Monument is within driving distance, featuring Lava Lands Visitor Center, Lava Butte, Lava River Cave, and the Newberry Caldera with Paulina and East Lakes. Hiking and hunting are popular in the surrounding area.
Directions
From Bend, travel about 27 miles south on Highway 97, then 11 miles west on County Road 43, 5.5 miles west on County Road 42, and 4 miles north on County Road 4270. The campground is accessed via the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway.
