North Star

Open

Open for the 2026 season. Sites 1-21 are first-come-first-served throughout the season. Sites 22-38 become reservable via Recreation.gov from July 3 through September 6, 2026. Potable water is not available; bring your own supply.

Special Weather Statement issued July 21 at 9:57AM CDT by NWS Duluth MN

9:57 AM — 7:00 PM

Due to continued dry conditions in forested areas and gusty north to northwest winds around 20 to 30 mph today, conditions will remain favorable for near-critical fire weather conditions through this afternoon. This is despite relatively higher minimum RH values expected today at 40 to 50 percent. The situation is evaluated daily by the National Weather Service and the Minnesota Interagency Fire Center. Dry and windy conditions could lead to the rapid spread of fires today. For more information on burning restrictions for Minnesota, see www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry/fire/firerating_restrictions.html.

From Recreation.gov

**!! New for 2026 !! **Campers will now be able to reserve sites #22-38 from July 3rd, 2026 to September 6th, 2026. Reservations will become available on Recreation.gov on a rolling basis on January 3, 2026.

About

North Star Campground sits on the shores of North Star Lake in Chippewa National Forest, approximately 4 miles south of Marcell or 25 miles north of Grand Rapids on State Highway 38. The campground features 38 non-electric campsites, all within easy walking distance of a sandy swimming beach. The lake is known for its many sheltered bays and inlets that create quiet water conditions ideal for fishing. Recreational opportunities include swimming, boating (non-motorized), canoeing, kayaking, hiking, wildlife viewing, photography, and mushroom picking. Hunting is permitted in season. Vault toilets are available but potable water is not provided, so campers must bring their own water supply. Pets are welcome but must remain on a leash of 6 feet or shorter and are not permitted in beach areas. Quiet hours are enforced from 10 PM to 6 AM, during which generators are prohibited. Black bears are active in the area; all coolers and attractants must be secured in hard-sided vehicles when unattended.
