About

New River Campground is a former developed campground managed by the U.S. Forest Service within the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area in the Jefferson National Forest. Located in Carroll County near the New River, this site was temporarily closed approximately 20 years ago and has not been reopened to the public. The campground currently has no operational facilities, including no restrooms, no drinking water, and no maintained campsites. While the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area offers numerous other camping opportunities including Beartree Lake, Grindstone, and Raccoon Branch campgrounds, as well as dispersed camping options throughout the recreation area, New River Campground itself remains unavailable for public use. The area is known for its diverse elevation ranging from 2,000 feet at the New River to over 5,700 feet at Mount Rogers, Virginia's highest peak.
