About
Millrace Campground at New River Trail State Park offers a primitive camping experience along the scenic New River at Foster Falls in Wythe County. This walk-in campground features 19 timbered tent sites overlooking the river, each equipped with a fire ring, lantern post, and picnic table. With no vehicular access to the campsites, visitors enjoy a short hike from the parking area to their site, creating a more secluded backcountry feel while still having essential amenities nearby. The campground provides direct access to the 57-mile New River Trail, a converted railroad right-of-way perfect for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. The New River itself offers exceptional fishing opportunities with populations of smallmouth bass, muskellunge, walleye, and numerous other game fish species. Tubing and paddling are popular activities, with boat rentals and launches available at Foster Falls. One site (MR019) is ADA accessible and reserved last if not needed by guests with disabilities. Millrace Campground is located 24 miles from the park's Cliffview Campground along the trail. The Foster Falls area features additional amenities including the Inn at Foster Falls, Discovery Center with educational programs, gift shop, and seasonal boat and bike livery. Drinking water and non-flush toilets are available at the campground. Reservations are required for all sites and same-day reservations are permitted.
