About

Hussy Mountain Horse Camp is a primitive equestrian campground situated in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. Located in the east fork of the Dry Run Valley at approximately 3,000 feet elevation, the area is well-shaded with hardwoods, hemlocks, and pines. The campground offers 10 sites across three group camping loops, each designed for horse camping with parking for 4-5 vehicles with trailers. Each loop provides wooden picnic tables, fire rings, hitching rails, bear-proof garbage containers, and vault toilets. Potable water is available from faucets. East Fork Dry Run Creek runs adjacent to the campground, providing a water source for horses. The camp offers direct access to several trails including the East Fork Divide Trail (4617), Dry Run Gap Trail (4613), and Highlands Horse Trail (337). Horse owners must have a current negative Coggins test certificate for any horse brought for recreational use in Virginia. Dogs are permitted but must be leashed (maximum 6 feet) within the recreation area. Summer days are warm with temperatures in the upper 70s to low 90s, while evenings typically cool into the 60s.
