About
Collins Cove Horse Campground is a primitive equestrian facility in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area of Jefferson National Forest. The campground consists of two large grassy fields shaded by hardwoods, hemlocks, and pines at approximately 2,000 feet elevation. Each of the 10 camping units features a wooden picnic table, fire ring, and hitching rails for horses. The campground provides direct access to several trails including the Virginia Highlands Horse Trail (337), Ewing Mountain Trail (4614), Mike's Gap Trail (4504), Moore Trail (4615), and Raven Cliff Trail (4601). Located in the Cripple Creek watershed, the area offers opportunities for fishing and wading. A creek adjacent to the campground provides water for horses, though potable water is not available for campers. Centrally located garbage bins and vault toilets serve the campground. Horse owners must have a current negative Coggins test certificate for any horse taken to public recreation areas in Virginia. Summer temperatures typically range from the upper 70s to low 90s during the day, cooling to the 60s in the evenings. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations.
