About
Comers Rock Recreation Area sits on top of Iron Mountain at 3,800 feet elevation, offering a small primitive campground and historic picnic area for outdoor enthusiasts seeking a remote mountain experience. The centerpiece of the day-use area is a log picnic shelter featuring a large stone fireplace, constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s.
The campground provides access to numerous hiking opportunities within walking distance. The Little Dry Run Wilderness offers long-distance backcountry trails, while Comers Rock Overlook and its former fire tower deliver 360-degree panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The Unaka Nature Trail provides an easier interpretive hiking option. Less than 2 miles from the campground, Hale Lake offers fishing, additional hiking trails, and canoeing opportunities.
This is a primitive campground with vault toilets and no potable water. Campers should bring adequate water supplies and be prepared for basic amenities. The gravel Forest Service Road 57 provides access to the campground but requires caution, especially in wet conditions. At this elevation, temperatures can be significantly cooler than in nearby valleys, and weather conditions can change rapidly.
