Lac Qui Parle Campground
Open — The Lower Campground is open year-round and requires reservations even in winter. Same-day reservations are available with no reservation fee.
Winter Weather Advisory issued April 2 at 6:59AM CDT until April 2 at 7:00PM CDT by NWS Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN
...MESSY SPRING SYSTEM BRINGS FREEZING RAIN, SLEET, AND SNOW THROUGH THIS MORNING... .Western and central Minnesota will experience mainly slushy wet snow with accumulations of 2 to 4 inches, meanwhile rain is favored in southern and southeastern Minnesota. In between the snow and rain, a messy wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain will result in ice accumulations and slippery travel. There is still a moderate degree of uncertainty regarding ice accumulation amounts, due to temperatures being very close to freezing and a fluctuation of only a degree or two likely having a large impact on final amounts. The greatest impacts from icing and freezing rain will occur over western Wisconsin and east-central Minnesota, with accumulations up to a quarter inch in Minnesota and a few tenths of an inch in Wisconsin. Power outages are possible due to icing of power lines in addition to gusty winds, and slippery to impossible travel will occur where ice accumulates. Slow travel from wet slushy snow is expected in western and central Minnesota. * WHAT...Mixed precipitation. Additional snow accumulations up to two inches, sleet accumulations around one third of an inch, and ice accumulations around a light glaze. * WHERE...Benton, Kandiyohi, Meeker, Morrison, Stearns, Todd, Kanabec, Mille Lacs, Chippewa, Douglas, Lac Qui Parle, Pope, Stevens, Swift, and Yellow Medicine Counties. * WHEN...Until 7 PM CDT this evening. * IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions will impact the Thursday morning and evening commutes.
About
Lac Qui Parle Campground sits within Lac Qui Parle State Park along the shores of Lac Qui Parle Lake on the Upper Minnesota River in western Minnesota. The park's name is a French translation of the Dakota name meaning "lake that speaks," referring to the sounds of thousands of migratory waterfowl that stop over during spring and fall migrations. The campground features two separate areas (Upper and Lower) with a total of 43 sites, including 37 with electrical service and 9 with full hookups. Additional options include three secluded cart-in sites, two group campsites accommodating 50 people each, and three camper cabins. The semi-modern campground provides flush toilets and hot showers. Recreation opportunities include swimming at the beach, boating with on-site launch access, 6 miles of hiking trails, and 5 miles of cross-country ski trails. The lake offers year-round fishing for walleye, northern pike, perch, and panfish, though water levels fluctuate during the season. Wildlife viewing is exceptional, with abundant waterfowl, bald eagles, and deer commonly spotted. The park also includes historic sites like Fort Renville and Lac Qui Parle Mission. The park's gravel roads remain accessible in winter for those seeking a quieter camping experience.
