Miller Cabin

Miller Cabin is a rustic two-room log cabin located at the junction of Confederate Gulch Road (FS Road 287) and Blacktail Road (FS Road 4171) in the Big Belt Mountains of west-central Montana. The cabin sits in the Townsend Ranger District at the confluence of Confederate and Blacktail Creeks, surrounded by mature trees and scattered forest. The cabin features two sets of bunk beds, a kitchen hutch with table and four chairs, a two-burner propane camp stove, and two propane lanterns. Basic pots, pans, dishes, and cleaning supplies are provided. A separate outhouse and wood shed are on the property. Guests must bring their own bedding, pillows, food, drinking water, garbage bags, toilet paper, flashlights, and pre-filled propane cylinders for the lanterns. No firewood is provided from June 1 through August 31. The area offers excellent recreation including hiking to high mountain lakes, hunting in fall, OHV riding, and cross-country skiing or snowmobiling in winter. Confederate Gulch holds significant historical interest as the site of one of Montana's richest placer gold strikes in the 1860s, when Diamond City briefly became the territory's largest community.

Directions

From Townsend, Montana, turn east from US Highway 287 onto US Highway 12 for approximately 3 miles. Turn north on State Highway 284 for approximately 15 miles. Turn northeast onto Forest Road 287 (Confederate Gulch) and travel approximately 8 miles to the cabin at the junction of FS Road 287 and Blacktail Road 4171. High-clearance vehicle recommended.
