About
Minerva Lake Campsite offers a wonderfully serene and peaceful primitive camping experience in Hiawatha National Forest. This single campsite is nestled in a small semi-open area bordered by hardwood trees and hemlocks on the shores of 45-acre Minerva Lake, which has long enjoyed a good reputation for fishing largemouth bass and perch. The campsite measures 40 ft. by 30 ft. and is suitable for one family with tents or small trailers. Due to limited turn-around space and a narrow access road that crosses a short steep hill, this site is best suited for moderate-sized vehicles. An improved day-use boat access with a gravel base is located adjacent to the campsite, though parking is limited and it's recommended for small boats and trailers only. This is a truly rustic experience with minimal amenities. No drinking water, restrooms, or primitive toilets are available on-site, so campers must come prepared. The campsite includes a fire pit and table. Swimming conditions at Minerva Lake are considered poor. Groceries, gasoline, and camping supplies are available approximately three miles south on County Road 437 in the Thunder Lake area. Reservations are required and made through Recreation.gov, with the campsite operating from May 15 through Columbus Day.
Directions
From Cooks (about 12 miles west of Manistique or 24 miles east of Rapid River on US-2), drive north 4.4 miles on County Road 442 to CR 437. Turn left (north) on CR 437 and drive 14.4 miles to FR 2767. Turn right (east) and drive 0.25 mile to the campsite. The access road crosses a short, steep hill and is narrow, but still capable of handling moderate-sized vehicles.
