About
Rim Lake Shelter is a backcountry Adirondack shelter located in the Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Adirondack shelters are three-sided structures that provide basic protection from wind and weather while maintaining an open-air camping experience. The shelter is situated in the western unit of the Hiawatha National Forest in Schoolcraft County, an area known for its pristine forests and abundant inland lakes. The Hiawatha National Forest encompasses nearly 900,000 acres across Michigan's Upper Peninsula, offering visitors access to remote wilderness areas, excellent fishing opportunities, and miles of trails. The western unit where Rim Lake Shelter is located stretches from the towns of Rapid River and Manistique along Lake Michigan to Munising on the Lake Superior shore. As a primitive backcountry shelter, visitors should come prepared with appropriate gear for wilderness camping. The Upper Peninsula experiences harsh winter conditions with significant snowfall, making winter access challenging. Campers should be self-sufficient and prepared for backcountry conditions in all seasons.
