About

Rim Lake Shelter is a primitive Adirondack-style backcountry shelter located within the Ironjaw Semi-Primitive Area of Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The shelter sits near Rim Lake, one of several small inland lakes accessible via the Pine Marten Run Trail, a 26-mile system of non-motorized trails open to hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. The three-sided wooden structure provides basic overnight shelter on a first-come, first-served basis at no cost. This is true backcountry camping with no potable water, no hookups, and minimal facilities. Campers should come fully prepared with water, food, and all necessary gear. The surrounding area features the wild and scenic Indian River, rolling hills, bogs, and numerous lakes including Swan, Nineteen, Ironjaw, Triangle, Dinner, Spud, Rumble, Sprinkler, Verdant, Rim, and Hub lakes. The Ironjaw Semi-Primitive Area is located approximately 30 miles northwest of Manistique in Schoolcraft County. Access to the trail system is available from three trailheads: East, Middle, and West. The nearest designated campsites with reservations are at Ironjaw Lake, which is about 0.6 miles from the parking area.

Directions

From Manistique, drive north 22 miles on M-94 to County Road 437, turn west and drive 3.5 miles to reach the East Trailhead. Alternatively, from the FH-13/US-2 intersection (about 14 miles east of Rapid River), drive north 19 miles on FH-13 to County Road 440, turn east 3 miles to FR 2258, then north 1.7 miles to the West Trailhead.
