About

The Indian River Adirondack Shelter is one of several backcountry Adirondack-style shelters scattered throughout the Ironjaw Semi-Primitive Area in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. These three-sided wooden structures offer basic overnight shelter for backcountry travelers exploring the Pine Marten Run Trail, a 26-mile system of non-motorized trails open to hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. The shelter provides a primitive camping experience in a remote, semi-primitive setting surrounded by lakes and northern hardwood forest. Campers must be self-sufficient, bringing all water and supplies. The area features excellent fishing opportunities in nearby lakes and streams, with brook and brown trout found in the Indian River watershed. Nearby reservable backcountry campsites at Ironjaw Lake, Swan Lake, Triangle Lake, and Lake Nineteen offer alternatives for those wanting a guaranteed spot. Tom's Lake Cabin and McKeever Cabin are also available for rent through Recreation.gov for those seeking more substantial shelter.

Directions

From the intersection of US-2 and Forest Highway 13 (approximately 14 miles east of Rapid River), travel north 18.7 miles on Highway 13 to County Road 440. Turn right and drive 4.6 miles to FR 2733, then turn left and drive 1.3 miles to the Ironjaw Lake trailhead parking area. The shelter is approximately 1.9 miles from the trailhead via the Pine Marten Run Trail.
