About

Indian River Adirondack Shelter is a primitive backcountry shelter located in the Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. An Adirondack shelter is a three-sided lean-to structure designed to provide basic overnight protection from the elements for backcountry travelers. The shelter is situated in Schoolcraft County near the Indian River, which offers beautiful northwoods scenery and varied landscapes including connected lakes and meandering channels through incised valleys. As a backcountry facility in a national forest, this shelter provides a rustic camping experience for those seeking solitude and wilderness immersion. The Indian River area is known for its excellent canoeing opportunities and the surrounding forest features mature hardwoods typical of the Upper Peninsula. Hiawatha National Forest allows dispersed camping throughout much of its lands, and backcountry shelters like this provide convenient overnight options for hikers, paddlers, and other outdoor enthusiasts exploring the region.
