Merchants Millpond State Park

Merchants Millpond State Park centers on a 760-acre millpond established over 190 years ago in Gates County, about 10 miles south of the North Carolina-Virginia border. The shallow, tea-colored waters wind through stands of massive bald cypress draped in Spanish moss and tupelo gum trees, creating an otherworldly landscape reminiscent of southern Louisiana. The park marks the northernmost natural range of the American alligator, and paddlers may spot these reptiles along with great blue herons, wood ducks, and abundant turtles. Paddle-in camping provides a true backcountry experience, with primitive sites accessible only by canoe or kayak. Campers paddle through the millpond and into Lassiter Swamp to reach the designated sites. The park rents canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards for those without their own vessels. Note that water levels can fluctuate, and low water may make reaching paddle-in sites difficult. The family campground with tent and RV sites is currently closed for construction until further notice. Only paddle-in primitive camping is available at this time.
