Chippokes State Park Shelters

Open — Open year-round dawn to dusk daily. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling 1-800-933-PARK.

About

Located near the visitor center at historic Chippokes Plantation State Park, these two picnic shelters provide excellent facilities for group gatherings with scenic James River views. The site has been a working farm since 1619 and is one of the oldest continuously farmed plantations in the country. Shelter 1 is a smaller facility that can accommodate 30-35 people without electricity, while Shelter 2 is a larger shelter that can accommodate 60-65 people and includes an electrical outlet. Both shelters are equipped with grills, picnic tables, and access to restroom facilities. The shelters are accessible via paved walkways from the parking lot and can be rented from 8 a.m. to dusk for all-day use. The park grounds are open dawn to dusk daily, and the visitor center with gift shop is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The park features 12 miles of trails, including the popular paved College Run Trail, access to James River shoreline, and the historic Farm and Forestry Museum. Visitors can explore the 1,947-acre park's natural beauty while enjoying modern amenities in a historic setting.
