About

Chippokes State Park Campground sits on the grounds of one of the oldest continuously farmed plantations in America, dating back to 1619. Located on the James River directly across from historic Jamestown in Surry County, the campground offers a unique blend of outdoor recreation and living history. The facility features 51 campsites divided into two distinct loops, each catering to different camping styles. Loop A contains sites 19-50 with 20 and 30-amp electric and water hookups, favored by tent campers for their abundant shade. Most sites aren't level but accommodate tents, pop-ups, and some RVs up to 30 feet. Loop B features sites 1-18 with 20, 30, and 50-amp service on paved, level sites up to 50 feet long, with some pull-throughs ideal for larger RVs. The campground also includes three rental yurts tucked into wooded areas, each with a large deck, and a group camping area with four tent sites accommodating up to 24 people. Beyond camping, visitors can explore 12 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, including the popular paved College Run Trail along the James River. The park's historic area features an 1854 Italianate mansion available for tours, formal gardens, and the Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum with over 600 antique farm implements. Fishing is permitted along the James River and College Run Creek, and canoes and kayaks can be launched for paddling adventures. The park's visitor center, gift shop, and seasonal ranger programs provide educational opportunities about the plantation's rich history spanning over 400 years of continuous agricultural use.
