About

Chippokes State Park Hunts campground sits on the historic grounds of Chippokes Plantation, one of the oldest continuously farmed properties in the United States, dating back to 1619. Located along the James River in Surry County across from Jamestown, the campground offers 51 sites with electric and water hookups divided into two distinct loops. Loop A features 31 wooded sites preferred by tent campers for their shade, accommodating rigs up to 30 feet with 20 and 30-amp service. Most sites in this loop are not level. Loop B caters to larger RVs with 18 paved, level sites up to 50 feet in length, including pull-through options and 20/30/50-amp service. Site 16 is ADA-compliant. The campground also includes a group camping area with four tent sites accommodating up to 24 people. Each campsite includes a fire ring, picnic table, and gravel living space. The campground has two bathhouses with flush toilets and hot showers, and a laundry facility near the Loop B bathhouse. An amphitheater sits near Loop A. Campers can explore 12 miles of trails including the paved 1.2-mile College Run Trail along the James River, visit the Farm and Forestry Museum with over 600 antiques, tour the 1854 Italianate Chippokes Mansion, and access the James River for fishing and paddling. The park's visitor center offers exhibits, a gift shop, and interpretive programs. Firewood is available for purchase.

Directions

From I-95 and I-295, take Route 10 towards Hopewell. Follow Route 10 East for approximately 40 miles to Surry. Turn left at the intersection of routes 10 and 31 (this continues on Route 10). Turn right at the stoplight. Turn left at Route 634 (Alliance Road), and the park entrance is four miles on the left. Vehicles over 3 tons should avoid Highgate Road off Route 10 due to weight restrictions.
