Chippokes State Park Hunts

Situated on the south bank of the James River in Surry County, Chippokes State Park Campground occupies land that has been farmed continuously since 1619, making it one of the oldest working plantations in America. The campground provides 50 sites across two distinct loops, each with bathhouse facilities. Loop A contains sites 19-50 with water and 20/30-amp electric service in a shaded setting favored by tent campers. Loop B offers sites 1-18 on paved, level pads with 20/30/50-amp service, accommodating rigs up to 50 feet with several pull-through options. Every site includes a fire ring for campfires, and firewood is available for purchase. The park features a dump station, laundry facilities at the Loop B bathhouse, and a camp store. Beyond camping, Chippokes offers over 15 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding through historic farmland and along the riverfront. The Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum showcases centuries of agricultural heritage. The campground operates seasonally from the first Friday in March through the first Monday in December. Reservations are available through Virginia State Parks and recommended during peak season. The park's location provides easy access to Jamestown via the free Jamestown-Scotland Ferry, making it an excellent base for exploring Colonial Virginia's historic triangle.

Directions

From I-95 and I-295, take Route 10 towards Hopewell. Follow Route 10 East for approximately 40 miles to Surry. Turn left at the intersection of routes 10 and 31 (this continues on Route 10). Turn right at the stoplight. Turn left at Route 634 (Alliance Road), and the park entrance is four miles on the left. Vehicles over 3 tons should avoid Highgate Road off Route 10 due to weight restrictions.
