Meadow Lake Campground

Closed

The campground is currently closed due to seasonal road conditions. The 6-mile gravel access road (FS Road 002) is not maintained during winter and typically remains impassable until late June or early July. Reservations are available from July 1 through Labor Day; outside that window, sites are first-come, first-served as weather permits.

About

Meadow Lake Campground is a remote, high-elevation destination in the Lemhi Mountain Range of east-central Idaho. At 9,160 feet, the campground sits at the base of 10,720-foot Meadow Lake Peak and along the shores of Meadow Lake, a 13.3-acre alpine lake stocked twice annually. Lodgepole and whitebark pines dot the area, with deer and mountain goats frequenting the surroundings. The campground offers 17 sites: 13 single sites and 4 double sites for larger groups. Each site includes a picnic table, tent pad, fire ring, and prep table. Double sites provide two of each amenity plus expanded parking. Two vault toilets serve the campground, and drinking water is available from a hand pump. There are no hookups, and campers must pack out all trash. Recreation centers on fishing and hiking. The lake allows bank fishing or small boats with trolling motors only; there is no boat ramp or dock. Trail 342 provides a gentle loop behind the campground, while Trail 057 climbs steeply toward Meadow Lake Peak. The nearby Gilmore Ghost Town offers a historical side trip.

Directions

From Leadore, drive 17 miles south on Highway 28 and turn right (west) onto Forest Service Road 002 at the old Gilmore Townsite. Follow the gravel road for 6 miles as it climbs 2,080 feet to the campground.
